SLAJ was established based on the vision of two Lima, Peru, lawyers: Gabriel García-Planas and Gabriel Larrieu-Bellido, who sought creative ways to involve the public in practical judicial reform efforts. They highlighted how the transparency and reliability of judicial systems affect the rule of law, development, immigration, human right, and foreign investment. They started to develop the involvement of and interaction with a diverse base of Peruvians, and correspondingly to seek the support of the international community, including Peruvian nationals living in the United States.
SLAJ welcomes collaboration. We are currently, among other efforts, supporting the initiatives of the Peru-based organization “Ciudadanos por la Justicia” (CIJUS). CIJUS was founded by Peruvian commercial lawyers and business people who consider judicial reform to be a catalyst for economic growth and social progress in Peru. CIJUS focuses on the research project “Reformulating the Judicial System of Peru.” The project will facilitate the formulation of specific proposals and reforms to enhance transparency of the judicial system in Peru, to combat corruption and the implementation of proposals and reforms through a national referendum.
